Using Autoscriber with Epic

Responding to a growing demand from EPIC hospitals, we are excited to bring Autoscriber’s ambient note-taking solution to the European market. While EPIC hospitals in the US have benefited from Ambient solutions, no similar solution has been available in Europe until now.

Who can make use of the integration?

Integrations are available to existing Epic clients. However, to ensure compatibility, clients must be running an Epic version released after May 2023 that supports the required features. Additionally, the following special updates must be installed based on the version you will be using at go-live:

  • May 2024: E10902612
  • Feb 2024: E10707983
  • Nov 2023: E10701263, E10711500
  • Aug 2023: E10606343, E10612928
  • May 2023: E10513734, E10517996

It is also required to request and activate the Ambient feature license from Epic. There is no additional cost for this license. If you're unsure whether your Epic version meets these requirements, we recommend consulting your Epic representative or IT team.

How do I setup the integration?

A detailed integration document outlining the exacts steps that are needed to be followed to set up the integration. This document can be requested from Autoscriber, or your Epic Account Manager. These steps can be summarised as follows:

  1. Download Autoscriber Application from Epic Vendor Services
  2. Configure SMART-on-FHIR and User Interface
  3. Enable Required API
  4. Set up Note Template(s)
  5. Configure User Access
  6. Testing in non-prod
  7. Go-live in Production

How does the integration work?

With the integration between Epic and Autscriber, the doctor is able to start recording a consultation in which the conversation is recorded, transcribed, summarised, and the result is automatically processed within the Epic platform.

The high-level operation is as follows:

  • During a visit in the exam room, a physician launches Autoscriber from Epic, identifies the visit and patient, and begins recording their conversation with the patient.
  • Autoscriber then generates the note text for various parts of a visit note and saves each note section to Epic for the given patient and visit.
  • The user opens the visits notes: using a pre-configured note template, the generated note text is pulled into their note.
